Klippers’s Apprenticeship Curriculum

Practical Growing Skills
The majority of practical work will be sowing, planting, weeding and harvesting vegetable crops.

Use and maintain a variety of hand-tools
Use small machinery
Identify and use workshop tools correctly
Safely drive a tractor in simple maneuvers
Explain safety hazards when using tractors
Identify major parts of a tractor
Carry out routine checks on a tractor

Estimate soil moisture by feel
Set out and trouble-shoot drip irrigation
Set out and trouble-shoot sprinkler & micro jet irrigation system

Mix up propagation mix and describe alternative ways of mixing up
Propagate from seed
Propagate from cuttings
Prick out
Pot up
Direct seed by hand and using an Earthway Seeder
Transplant crops

Take a soil sample for soil testing

Construct a compost heap
Use a tractor-mounted front-loader to turn compost
Monitor compost temperature

Identify all crops grown at Klipper’s Organics
Differentiate vegetable seedlings from weed seedlings.
Identify noxious weeds
Hand weed a variety of crops
Recognize presence of pests and diseases

Maintain perennial herbs and vegetables – weed, prune, divide
Make salves and lipbalm with herbs (an introduction)
Prune and train apple trees, peach, and plum trees
Prune and train tomato and cucumber plants

Harvest and prepare vegetables, herbs, and fruit for sale
